From Adam Bradley and Andrew DuBois’ new Anthology of Rap, recently published by Yale University Press:
‘The name KRS-One is an acronym for “Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone.” He values the power that knowledge confers while he critiques the knoweldge we recieve…Never using “Street Knowledge” as a means to mystify or merely self-advertise, he makes it organic and substantial, specific and practical. He recommends vegetarianism; he outlines and categorizes hip-hop like a Linnaeus from the Bronx…’ (145).
Especially enjoying the essays of the editors, and Henry Louis Gates Jr’s “Forward”.
(Aside: Yale also published the Selected Poems of Adonis this season, which I’ve been reading, glad to finally have a substantial collection of Adonis in English in order to read, finally able to begin to assess a poet whose work I’ve read about for years, only able to read in smaller collections or anthologies.)
